Hi,
My Epson 740 has finally bitten the dust (literally - the black ink head has clogged up). So, I need a new printer. Now, I very rarely print in colour at all, and do sometimes have access to a cheap inkjet, so I really only need a printer for black and greyscale. My budget is limited- about $180 max, but would a cheap laser be higher quality and more reliable than a similarly priced inkjet?
Thanks,
David

If you mostly do text get a laser printer for sure.

I love my Canon i850. I can only imagine the i860 to be even better (albeit uglier thanks to the extra paper tray for photo paper).
$200 laser printers are the super-el-cheapo models. You'll probably be happier with a higher-end inkjet (and if you get a Canon, the ink costs -- while still higher than those of a real laser printer -- will be manageable).

Samsung 1210. very nice cheap laserprinter. With only 8 MB RAM in it it will not take kindly to printing 100 MB TIFFs but for the bread and butter printing it is so nice, and even that "trial" toner you get with the printer is supposed to last thousands of pages

If you do mostly test then the Laser will look better and cost less in the long run next to any ink jet.

To tell you the truth, basically any inkjets and even the cheap ones will do fairly decent text and graphics today. Plain text, I will definitely get a cheap laser printer, but for me, I am fairly happy with my HP PSC 1210 (printer, Scanner, Copier) all-in-one machine.

Hi,
I thought that I would update you all on what I settled for : a HP Laserjet 1010 - 12ppm, 8Mb, 600dpi. So far, I'm really impressed with the machine itself, but the drivers are not yet complete - they admit to features missing, and I can't at the moment even find out how much toner is left. I'm downloading some software which should be updated, so I'll see if that improves the situation.

Really good impression from Brother 1440, the fastest laser printer in the low-midrange, 14 ppm. Added 12 mb ram stick from old LC 630 to it. In XP, incredibly fast. In OS X, quite fast too. Good drivers for OS X. Very sharp text and good grayscale pictures.

No luck with the download - its the same as came on the driver CD.
Now, does anyone know how to use the HP laserjet toolbox - its supposed to be accessed through a browser, but the only instructions are for windows? It does say that it is compatible with OSX though.
Thanks,
David
