I'm going to be getting an iPod, and I was wondering: am I limited by the size of my iBook's HD? ie, can I move all my music onto the ipod and thus free up space on my iBook, or do the collections have to be synced, thereby making me keep two copies of each track, one on iBook, one on iPod? If the latter, I'll only ever be able to keep as many tunes on my iPod as I can fit on my Mac right?

Right. At least as far as music is concerned. The iPod can also be used as a hard drive, however, so you can store files there as well.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

I just bought a 40 and this it what i have found out. You have 2 settings for the thing. Preset is that it automatically updates the ipod every time you plug it in. So, if you delete your tunes off your primary unit it will update and you will loose all of your stuff. Bad. Very bad. But you can change it so you manually update. Then you can delete the itunes folder on the primary unit while retaining all of your music on the ipod. However my question is: is this a setting changed on the ipod, or in itunes?

The only problem then is what happens if your iPod breaks or gets lost or whatever, then all your music is gone.

i keep all of my music on my ipod
got this cool applescript for itunes that rips my cds to my ipod so it wont take up room on my ibook
so my ipod is all of my music, i have lost it all once but i learned to never automatically update the ipod, but after that ive had no problem with keeping all my music on it

so to answer your question
you can keep all music on the ipod, and it isnt limited by the hard drive size
w3rd..

Yeah get the 40 gig, and then get another 40 gig to back it up with . Just in case the first one breaks or gets stolen like someone else said above me.

I think because you have only 10GBs you should buy the 40 or if not, a refurb'd 30GB for like 350.

It doubles as a firewire drive so you can put more crap on your computer.

Edit: One problem with using the iPod as your music source, you can't burn cds from the iPod. But why when you can buy an FM transmitter for the car?

I think theres a crack to create a playlist out of songs from your iPod...then you can burn them on a CD. Or you can extract the songs you want to burn from your iPod to your HD and then use Toast or iTunes to burn them to a CD. Anyways, it is possible to create music CDs even if all your songs are on the iPod.

Use TinkerTool to view hidden files, then double click on the iPod and there you'll find your songs placed in different hidden folders. There are some apps that do this better and easier but most are shareware.
