Is it possible/cost effective to upgrade a 10 gig IPOD to a 30 or 40 GIG drive?
Can this be done on ones own?

The most cost-effective upgrade is to buy a new iPod and sell the old one on eBay. I am not kidding.

The drive won't fit. The 10 GB iPod is thinner than the 40 GB. Anyways, the price of the bare drive probably rivals that of the entire iPod.

Music fills a lot of my iPod, but I like to leave a little space for files. That's what my spare 3.1gb is for...)

I believe long ago, when the 10 Gig came out (or the 20 or 15 or one of those upgrades), that someone indeed tried it. The used the same size drive, it just had denser platters. It wouldnt work. I think the concensus was that somewhere in the iPod hardware, there is code that says what size hard drive should be in it, to limit people from upgrading it.

40gb is great...
i may only need 10gb for music, but having all that extra space is great for backing up documents, software, movies, whatever and bringing it where ever you go
