iPod works with Windows XP and Mac?

I just ordered the new iPod and it is supposed to arrive on Monday or Tuesday, however, I don't have my PowerBook yet. Can it work with box Windows XP and OS X? I have a FireWire port on both machines, but I also heard stories that it will work on one operating system, but not the other without wiping it all.
