In the manual for my new iPod, it says it cannot charge in the cradle if the computer is asleep (since it is connected and charging through firewire). However, when I put it in the cradle, even if my G5 is asleep, it shows that it is charging.
Is it or isn't it?

It is. Not all Macs can charge the iPod when they're asleep, but most of the newer ones do.

I think there is also a difference between desktops and portables here. None of the portables I've owned have had powered firewire ports when asleep.

Oddly enough, as long as it's plugged into the wall, my Quicksilver DP800 will charge the iPod when the computer is off....

I take that back, I forgot my iPod was connected to my external FW CD-RW, which is always on.

My Al15" charges the iPod while sleeping. Even the USB ports work. I was really excited to discover these features because it will make it so much easier to recharge my iPod and PDA on the road. With my old laptop I had to find opportunities to charge while the computer was awake, which were few and far between. Now I can do it overnight. Much easier!
