I've got a 2nd gen 10 gig iPod (not the dockable one) and the battery life on the thing sucks, Apple advertises 8 hours, I'm lucky if I get 4, so something's not right....The iPod is about 7 months old and although well out of Target's 30-day return policy, there's still time left on Apple's 1 year manufacturer warranty. Does anyone know how possible it is to get it repaired/replaced by Apple? Or am I stuck with what I've got. Thanks

No offense, but why don't you ask Apple? They would know better than we would.

Yeah, I'll give em a call tomorrow when their support lines are open (I assume the number to call is 1800 APL CARE?) but I figured I would check and see if the answer would be a definite "no" before i wasted my time.
Has anyone else had a troublesome iPod like this and gotten it repaired/replaced? Also, if I'm lucky and they replace it, considering I paid $400 for the player, what do you think they'll give me...a 2nd gen 10 gig, probably refurbished, or a 3rd gen 10 gig worth $300 or a 3rd gen 20 gig, worth $400, what I paid.

Let me put in a word for CompUSA's extended warranty program.
My wife bought me an iPod (10gig 2nd generation) last Christmas. About a month ago I thought my iPod was screwed up and brought it in to CompUSA. They didn't even seem to care what my issue was just started looking for a new iPod to exchange it out with. They did not have one in stock (they say they have a hard time keeping them on the shelf) so I was asked to call the next day and see if they came in for the exchange. I found out the issue was with my firewire port when my iSight is connected so all was fine and I didn't have to exchange it after all. Yeah I could have gotten a new iPod still but I like my 2nd generation one just fine.
Anyway... if you have a CompUSA close then buy your iPod there next time and pay the 35 bucks for the extended warranty.
Also... if it's you battery going out isn't there a site on the web that tells you have to replace it? Thought I read that somewhere here.

Assuming it is not damaged by abuse or user tasmpering, it should be no problem.
In the UK at least they will repair (very rare) or usually just replace it with a reconditioned model...
I've had 4 replaced in my time.
Peace,
Marc

My 2nd Gen. 20G iPod just crashed on me. Couldn't bring it back from the dead. I called Apple, they sent me out a shipping box and I sent it in. I got it back a couple of days later. A new (or refurbed) 2nd Gen. 20G is what they sent me and it works great. I also have a CompUSA TAP plan on it, but since I still had the Apple warranty, I decided to use that first. From what I understand about the TAP plan is that you can use it once and they will replace the product, no questions asked. Then you have to buy a new policy. Not a bad deal if you want to update your hardware every couple of years.
