I'm going to be buying a used Quicksilver.

It only comes with ADC and VGA at this time.

From what I read using DVI will give you superior quality. Is this true? I mean does it just kick VGA and ADC ass?

What cards can I buy to use a DVI Samsung display?

And which one would you recommend.

I want one with 1280 by 1024.

I like the 172 T because the way it goes up and down.

I think I've decided to get a Samsung, but which one?

It is kind of expensive. there seems to be many versions of the same samsung displays all with various prices and it's hard to see the difference.

What is th 15 and 17 inch samsung that would be good choices?

I should note, I saw the 172W at the store, and it blew me away. It looked great. I love the widescreen look, but at the same time I dont' know if I would like that all the time. I think I would prefer more height every now and then.

Thank you.

First of all ADC is the same as DVI, except it has power and USB in the same cable. No difference in quality. I don't actually think VGA is that much worse than DVI, but I would definitely choose DVI or ADC over VGA if you have the choice. As for the 172W, I've heard that some people have had issues getting it work on the Mac -- this may have been just with powerbooks, but it's work looking into before buying. Do a search on this forum. I personally have a 172T and it's very nice.

I'd like to add my support for Samsung Monitors - I have a 181T, which is cheaper than the Apple 17", and has dual inputs. It takes up very little desk space and is fairly adjustable. The only down point is that mine has 1 dead subpixel, but thats not too bad when you think that the screen has about 4 million!

So the 15 ADC monitor that apple used to sell is digital?

I don't understand what you mean. If it's ADC, it's digital, yes.

So ADC is apple's unique digital connection that also carries usb, and power, while DVI is the standard one used by everyone else?

VGA is analog?

So will ADC always look better than a VGA monitor?

Yes, ADC = DVI, but the connector is different. You'll need adapter to switch from one to the other.

VGA is analogue, and quality varies. On an LCD, the top ones do VGA quite well (provided the signal coming in is good), and almost as well as ADC/DVI.

However, VGA on a cheap LCD monitor often doesn't look so good. Also, many video cards (esp. on PCs) have lousy VGA quality. Even if an LCD is great, it can't compensate for a lousy VGA signal.

In my setup on my PC with Samsung 172T.

Sapphire Radeon 9100 DVI: 10
Sapphire Radeon 9100 VGA: 9

Sapphire Radeon 9000 VGA: 8

Asus Geforce4 MX 440 DVI: 10
Asus Geforce4 MX 440 VGA: 5 (unusable IMO).

Diamond S3 VGA: 4

Trident 8900C VGA: 7 (Heheh, it actually works in XP - 10 years old & only 1 MB RAM )

On my PowerBook SD 1 GHz with Samsung 172T.

DVI: 10
VGA: 8

I tried a Samsung non-digital LCD monitor and had issues getting it to display it's native resolution. I took it back an stepped up to the 191T DVI connected digital and I'm very impressed. Go with the DVI connection.

I read lot of guys being happy with the 171T so give that a shot.

If you worried about the display dropping a pixel then make sure you buy from someone that will not have an issue with you returning it if it drops one. Or just tell them it wouldn't display correctly if it does. I went through two 20 Apple displays that both dropped a pixel within 10 minutes of being on. Took them both back (CompUSA was very cool about it) and picked up the Samsung 191T from CDW. Again... I'm very happy with it.

There is a setting in the display prefs to allow resolutions other than "recommended".
