I looking to by a new scanner soon, and I want one that drivers built-in to 10.3 as I'd like to use Image Capture and iPhoto for easy import. I found a list for cameras, but not for scanners.

Any suggestions?

Digging through the 10.3 files, it looks like an Epson scanner is the way to go if you want built-in drivers.

Definitely Epson:

I have an old Perfection 636U that is finally supported in OS X (I could have used the excellent shareware VueScan from Hammrick Software but could not justify the $60-$80 (depending on the license) to scan 3-5 times per year).

The drivers that come with your epson scanner are better anyway so who knows why Apple wrote any.

When you use Epson's drivers, do they let you import images from the scanner directly via Image Capture/iPhoto, or do you have to use some different software that comes with the scanner as well?

See that's my issue too. I like using Image Capture/iPhoto for most things. Those proprietary scanner apps are for the birds.

I'm still stalking an Epson scanner.

Weren't there some rumors that Apple was collaborating with the author of VueScan in order to provide built-in Image Capture plug-ins for all the scanners supported by VueScan? What happened? And what about the built-in OCR capabilities?

Let's hope they'll provide all this in some future Panther update, at least...

Well I went with the Epson Perfection 2400. There is a $30 rebate available now, plus some places are offering additional discounts.

So far I love it. Scanning via Image Capture is everything I imagined it would be. Smooth, logical, simple, etc. It even supports those "email image" (etc.) buttons should you want to use them. You can set them to open whatever you want. Could be handy for a frequent scan if you set it to an Apple script. And for polish, it uses a pic of that actual scanner in the app. Gotta love that Apple touch. It's the little things.

So I'm a happy camper, and I'm looking for an Epson printer next. The Stylus Photo 900 is on sale...

PS - it also came with Adobe Elements 2.0 (Mac & Windows) which I happen to like.

BTW (even if not directly related to your scanner choice, of course), it's interesting to see that there's a TWAIN SANE Interface for Mac OS X (also available as 3 binary package installers), based on the famous SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) open source project (also available in unstable form through Fink).

I think Apple should definitely provide something VueScan- or SANE-based to enable Image Capture also for "old" scanners/multifunction devices (à la Gimp-Print, that is)!

I just tried the latest Epson drivers. I really like scanning in Image Capture but I was hoping for a way to get the Photoshop plug-in for scanning inside that app on occasion. Well long story short, stick to Image Capture. The latest Epson drivers do the typical thing they do which is to load some POS service to look for it's buttons, and some garbage scan software written by God-knows-who. Basically, it's an either one or the other and I'm sticking to the Apple's Image Capture.

With third party device drivers, I'm with Chef in Apocalypse Now, "Never get out of the boat!"

I'd still like to find a Photoshop plug-in, but if that doesn't happen, I'm more than happy to scan it in via Image Capture.

Use the Twain Driver and not that poor excuse of a standalone app they released. It has more options, and doesnt install any of that button detection software (it's essentially just a PS Plug-in). Click link and scroll to bottom (Twain Driver v5.75A)

(The driver works for all Perfection Scanners)

I actually tried that first, but it takes over and reduces the function of Image Capture.

I cannot get my Epson Perfection 1650 to work under Panther. Now and again if I reinstall the drivers it will scan once. But then it always makes Photoshop go kaput. Ditto for the Epson Scan utility. Image Capture doesn't see it at all. VERY frustrating. Anyone been able to work it?

Hrrrrm. So when you uninstall the Epson drivers, it won't be seen by the built-in drivers? Maybe it's a bug?
