I've had my MX700 for a couple of months now. Overall, it works great. Every now and then though, it starts freaking out on me. The mouse movement will become very sporadic and inaccurate. The left mouse button will basically start acting like a hold-click. For example, if I click on a folder in my dock, rather than opening the folder, it will display the hierarchal list of contents.

The battery is charged, I've tried hitting the connect buttons. It usually returns to normal after a few minutes, but makes me pull my hair out till it does. This behavior occurred both in 10.2.8 as well as now in Panther. Any ideas?

Do you use the Logitech driver?
I use USB Overdrive and I get no problems like this with my MX700.

Yeah, I'm using the Logitech driver. I have a PowerBook and it seems to happen more when I get back to my desk and plug it back in. Would you recommend USB Overdrive? What other advantages does it have?

Personally I'm not using any additional drivers for my MX700. I just plugged it into my mac and its worked fine for me. However, I'm not sure if you can take advantage of all of the buttons that way. For me, I only use the right and left mouse buttons anyway.

Do you have any other device that use infered near the mouse? My gf and I both use MX700 and sometimes her mouse would make mine freak up.

Nope. I don't have anything else near it. The only thing that is even capable of IR is my Palm M505. But as long as its not using its IR capabilities, it shouldn't be having any effect.

I'm having this problem too. Glad to see I'm not the only one. I'll be upgrading to 10.3 in the next day or so, so I'll switch over to USB Overdrive and see if that improves the situation. The logitech drivers not giving individual application support make them pretty useless anyways.

Same problem with USB Overdrive. Guess it must be a problem with the mouse or something interfering with it. I do have a wireless MS mouse, but it's not in use when I'm using the MX.

The mouse does not use IR. It uses RF (radio frequency). So, potentially, any device that spits out RF noise/EMI could disrupt the mouse.

If you use a CRT monitor, make sure the mouse's receiver/charger is far as possible from the display. Avoid using low-frequency cordless phones (900MHz or less); try 2.4GHz phones (or, if you're an AirPort user, go with the 5+GHz frequency phones). Keep the base away from radio tuners/receivers. Make sure you don't have any grounding issues in your house (i.e., does the problem occur when the fridge/vacuum/HVAC/dishwasher pop on?).

I have an MX-700, and I've not had any such issues. The mouse, if I remember has two channels, switchable via the "connect" button on the bottom of the mouse. Check the manual, though (not sure where mine is).

Also, make sure no grime is obscuring the optical sensor, though I doubt this would result in button/click problems.

If, after all this, the problem still occurs, then you may well have a mouse hardware (mouse or receiver) problem.

edit: I just saw that you have another wireless mouse in the vicinity of the MX-700. That could very well interfere, even if it's not "in use." To verify, pull the batteries out of the MS mouse and see if your problems persist.

so basically, you bought a mouse with eight buttons, just to use only two or three of them?

ok.

As far as the advantages of USB Overdrive vs. the the Logictech Control Center, USB Overdrive just gives you more options. You can have the mouse setup different for an enormous amount of applications. For instance, I can have my mouse function in one particular way for Safar, and then when I am in mail.app, it has entirely different functions and then for the Finder, another set of functions, etc... This is a seamless process, the only time I have to mess with USBO is when I set it up for these functions, outside of that, it just works in the background. With the Control Center, you can only have the mouse function in one set of ways.

Plus the logictech drivers are just all around screwy, at least in the past for me, I will still buy Logictech mice, but I just toss their cd back in the box.
peace,

ciphun
