Can you use a cell phone to actually DIAL out to your ISP? Or do you have to use it as a GPRS modem? The reason I ask is that GPRS in AT&T costs money - per kb! Yet, I have so many night and weekend minutes, it often goes unused. Can I have my phone just act as the "dialer"? So I use minutes instead of kb...

I have AT&T also, it's my understanding that they block the ability to dial an ISP and use your minutes instead of your KBs. It sucks cause the data plans are so expensive.

It really should work no matter what carrier you have. As far as your phone knows you are just dialing a number.
If I remember correctly the data just gets sent like an analog modem...so they shouldn't be able to block it out.

Again im not sure...but i think it should work. Someone correct me if im wrong.

M2

P.S. it works with tmobile and the nokia 3650
...Just try it out!

I use my tmobile phone to make CSD calls all the time (dialing an ISP, not using GPRS). The downside to this free approach is speed:

Not 56k, not 33k, not 28.8, not even 14.4... 9.6kbps. How badly does that suck? 1k per second, not good.

I get about 1.5K/sec using CSD...

Its only suitable for emergencies.
i.e. cable internet is down, and I need to check my mail for some reason...

Yes - you can use a GPRS phone as a GRPS modem or as an analogue modem.

It's a LOT slower - so It may be a false economy - Once the page has actually loaded you will have been on line for a long time.
