I have a Sandisk SDDR-55 Smartmedia card reader. It has worked fine with Jaguar for over a year. I tried to use it for the first time today after installing Panther. It shows up in the system profiler, but the card never mounts on the desktop, and iPhoto can't tell it is connected. Has anyone else had problems with this reader and Panther?

I don't use the same card reader, but I'm experiencing the exact same problem with my no name 6-in-1 reader and CF card from a CoolPix 950.

I also have a Sandisk SDDR-91 card reader. It works perfectly on my 12" Powerbook plugged directly in a usb port and also on my iMac FP when plugged into a Belkin usb 2.0 hub. I just tired it out (to double check before I posted) with some compact flash cards shot with a Canon and Nikon dlsr. No problems here.

Exactly what version of Panther are you running? How does it work? You attach it and iPhoto starts up? Does it also mount the CF card like a disk on the Desktop?

You have the same model I do. My Mac can see it in System Profiler, but it is otherwise useless and "invisible" to applications.

I'm running Panther 10.3.4. I don't have iPhoto loading images automatically (but they import well). The CF cards show up on the desktop and I can manipulate files as I want. I use a range of cards from 256k to 1 gig. The Canon cards (from a Digital Rebel) are mine. I borrowed the Nikon cards (from a D 100) from my daughter's boyfriend just for testing purposes. Everything works as it should.

Thanks for the info. This is quite a mystery that apparently only happens to some people with the same setup. I doubt it will ever be addressed.

I was the original topic starter for this thread last October. I found a solution for my particular problem, but I guess I never posted it to this thread. Here is a copy of a post I wrote on the Macrumors forums back on Oct 29th, 2003. Maybe it will be of some help.

I was able to get my Sandisk Imagemate Smartmedia card reader (SDDR-55) working today, so I thought I'd post the details for anyone else having the same problem. Someone on another forum had posted something about a particular kext that supported his card reader under 10.2. It was OnUSBMassStorageClass.kext. I did an archive and install to Panther, so I checked my previous system folder. The above kext was in Previous System ->Previous System 1 -> System -> Library -> Extensions. The kext was not present in the Panther System -> Library -> Extensions folder. So, using "sudo cp" in terminal, I copied the kext from my previous system to the new one. After a reboot, I successfully downloaded pictures from the card reader.

I have not noticed any system instability so far, but there is always the chance this could cause a problem later. I do wonder why this kext was left out of Panther. (On a side note, my Panther package was missing disk 2, so it is possible this kext was included in one of the disk 2 packages. I still haven't received a disk 2 from Apple.)
