Do you need a G4 to burn DVD's or will it work with a G3.

I have an ibook 500 with 576 of ram, I assume it would as well as my CD, but maybe I'm wrong.

It would be nice to have one for backups and the like.

burning a DVD is no different from burning a CD, insofar as you're just burning data to a medium. so your machine can have any processor, provided you can transfer the data fast enough. you should note that you cannot use apple's applications with external DVD burners, but third-party applications such as toast work just fine.

what requires a faster process is encoding DV footage into DVD video... for that a faster processor is a definite advantage.

But if I want to burn a video DVD it would take a long time on G3 500.

encoding the video into DVD format would take a long time. burning that data to a DVD disc would take the same amount of time as it would on a G4.
