I am choosing between "renting' dvr capabilities from Time Warner Cable (40hrs) @$7.00 a month and purchasing my own Tivo and having 2 boxes in my entertainment center.

So my question is, one of my only concerns in not actually owning the DVR, is that i won't get to keep recorded shows in the long run. I would also need to archive more often since i can't upgrade past 40hrs of record time.

So here is my question. What are my options for archiving digitally stored shows from a self owned Tivo vs a DVR owned by TWC.

1) The DVR's archive method will probably rely an playing the recorded material out, recording it with a capture device of some kind (what is the best device for this and how much does it cost est?)

2)Would i have to do the same with a self-owned Tivo? If so then the answer to #1 will be sufficient and I will clearly choose #1. But if there is another option to retreive the material digitally, I would consider buying a Tivo or atleast comparing the processes.
