I bought my first gen iPod almost 2 years ago and I decided to try a battery test on it today.
I started it running at 8:15 AM this morning on shuffle and now it is coming on 5pm and it it still still going with just one bar left in the battery.
Lets just say I am very impressed... two years later and this thing which has traveled all over the place with me is still living up to original spec.
Good job Apple.

Yah! My first gen 5 GB iPod is still going like a champ. I'm a bit worried that the battery is losing its kick, but I haven't really tested it. I should try that. It's still plenty long though.
I was kind of pissed for a while when the iPods just kept getting bigger and bigger capacities. Now though, I'm kind of glad that I can only hold 5 GBs, it forces me to really think about the music I'm going to put on my iPod. As a result, I have awesome playlists on my iPod. Shweet.
I don't think I'm ever going to sell this. Ever.

Have to disagree, I am afriad. I have the old scroll wheel 10 gig iPod, and the battery is finished.
I have used the iPod A LOT, but now it won't hold charge. I can fully charge it - and without using it at all - will be completely drained within about 8 hours.
It really sucks because essentially it is no longer portable.
I am looking into getting a replacement battery.
Anyone with a similar experience?

I just saw replacement batteries for sale the other day, I'll try and track down the site I saw them on. Comes with instructions for replacing them too....

Sorry to hear that man. I'm assuming that you mean it loses its charge in eight hours while it is off. If your getting eight hours of continuous playback, that's freaking awesome.
If you wouldn't mind, could you post your replacement battery adventure? I have a feeling I'll be needing to replace my battery in a year or two. Hope that isn't the case though.

Mine is also running run after 2 years. The only thing is, i only have 800MB left and i have feeling that will fill up fast as i have been getting more and more music recently. I might have to update to the 20gig.

My 5 GB is still going strong and it's used almost everyday. I would like to upgrade to a newer iPod someday but I can't stand the new button layout and the sensitivity of the buttons.
Naplander - Have you tried reseting the battery. There was a time when my iPod's battery would last only 4 hours or lose it's charge over night. Resetting the battery brought it back to 8-10 hours of continuous playback per charge.
To reset your battery, follow the instuctions on this thread:
My original 5GB now sucks

Thanks for the advice.
It loks abit hectic, but I will give it a try. I am currently without Mac, so when I get my new machine, I'll give it a go.
Do you have to have version 1.2.1? If so, does anyone have a link handy where it can be downloaded?
Do you think version 1.3.1 will work too?
Has anyone fitted a new battery to their iPod?
Thanks!!
