When I bought my G5 I realized I couldn't move my 200gb drive from my G4 over. So it just sat there for about 2 weeks. Then I got this bright idea that I can remove the 120gb drive that was in the LaCie case (the one with the blue dot-light)

Anyway, once I installed and it booted up fine, it said 180gb of HD space...which was normal, then I decided to format it using Disk Utility and then half way through the progress bar (I checked on Zero All Data) it says the disk could not be recognized and gave me the option to ignore, cancel or initialize.

Now the drive only shows 127gb of space! I'm sure I can just remove it and then place it in the internal connectors of a G4 and reformat it regain the full 180gb. But is the size of 127gb something that is specific to the LaCie firmware? I would like to use the 200gb without being limited to just 127gb.

Are you running Panther? There is an issue where it won't recognize more than 120 GB on an external drive. Reported on macfixit.com:

"The only FireWire expansion cards that can properly recognize drives with more than 128 GB are those based on the ATA-6 specification. ATA-5 based FireWire cards will not be able to recognize more than 128 GB of one volume. Since the ATA-6 functionality requires new drivers, it stands to reason that with installation of Panther, some part of the specific FireWire driver - or some link to the firmware - was affected.

Some readers have reported that they are once again able to address more than 128 GB of disk size by installing the recently released firmware updates from LaCie and WiebeTech. "

Good luck!

Thanks when I get home later I will update the firmware, or try using a Sonnet's Allegro FireWire card in the G5.
