can someone shed some light on this? That cnet loser mentioned skipping tracks as a reason not to buy and ipod.

I jog, bike and shag all with my ipod and i've never had it skip once!

is this guy just a total ****ing retard?? what gives..

people think that b/c 20 years ago a good bump to your hd would kill it, that this is still true. You can throw one of these drives against a goddamn wall and it's fine.

wtf.

How long have you had it and how often do you run with it? I'm curious, because I've heard both sides of the story on this.

I have an original 5GB iPod. It's been doing +/- 4 miles a day on a treadmill. 5 days a week for almost 2 years. The only problem was a dying battery that was easily replaced.

Same here. I use my original 5gb when I workout 3-4 days a week on the stair master, cross trainer or running the track. I've dropped it on the ground 2 or 3 times. The worst thing that happened was the scroll wheel popped off. It was easy to push back in but now it's very sensitive when scrolling. Oh well, it's no biggie.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

I recently mountain biked for the first time with my iPod in my pocket. It worked great. However with it in your pocket, its really not subjected to any major G forces at all, so I wouldn't expect any problems. Same with jogging. I mean its not like its attached to the bike, that would kill it fer sure, but just drop it in your pocket and your good to go.

My iPod (2nd gen/20GB). Does "skip" (more like pause for a moment during a song) every now and then. This has nothing to do whether its moving or not. It happens with a frequency of maybe one song in 100.

Twice, while I was walking and the iPod was in my pocket, it froze and required a reset. Both times this definitely happened while it was accessing the hard drive. No data loss (AFAICT). I have loose pockets, so this was probably the worst way to carry it, since it would slam into my thigh with each step. I've never had any problem carrying it in a more "reasonable" manner (belt clip, in a bag, holding it, etc).

For me, this is well within acceptable tolerances for a highly complex mechanical device which gets the rough treatment.

P.S. Either Chris Breen or Bob LeVetus stress tested a 1st gen 5GB while playing. The same iPod survived five foot drops on its back and sides. and falling from a moving bike onto its back. All on concrete. A drop from the bike onto its side finally killed it.

Nah I doubt it. While mine was off I once dropped it onto the tile floor in our kitchen (slipped from my arm) and um yeah. there was absolutely nothing protecting it. *slam* right on it's back.. scared the ***** out of me until I turned it on and all was well

had my 5gb sitting on my lap in the car once, stood up and the ipod flew about 3 feet landing on the asphalt....scratch on the back, and a tiny dent in the corner...still works like a champ.

My 3rd gen / 15GB iPod used to skip all the time when I would walk with it in my pocket (I mean walking, not running). Usually it was in my pants pocket. In the winter when it's in my jacket pocket it doesn't seem so succeptible to getting bumped around. Also, ever since I got one of those rubbery covers for it, it seems to happen less.

But for a while it was skipping a lot and occasionally a track would get corrupted.

Every once in a while my 20GB 2g iPod will pause between songs but that's it. I've dropped it from 5 feet or so right onto brick and it kept on playing. The iPod's hard drive must've been made by Timex (takes a licking, keeps on ticking).

I bumped my original iPod (10G) into a concrete bollard, it was in my pocket and got between me and the rock. After this it had a slight dent in and wouldn't play. Running the diagnostics showed that the disk was faulty. Apple replaced my iPod and I've been more careful with it since.

My 3G 15GB iPod hasn't really had a problem with skipping, but it seems to discharge static electricity or something when it's in my coat, as I hear loud pops and crackles through the headphones when walking. I hope it's not dying little by little because of this!

Nah, Just touch the headphone cord to bare skin and it stops. It's either the metal case, or the headphone cord that isn't insulated as well as it should be.
