I'm looking for an external Firewire drive to purchase (150-250 GB). I'm a graphic designer on an older Mac G4. I was considering purchasing one, and thinking forward to when I purchase a new Mac, either with USB 2 or Firewire 800. Does anyone recommend one that might let me connect both now and take advantage of the faster technology when I upgrade to a new machine.

I've worked with a couple of LaCie's, but was curious about others (maxtor, akumen)

PS I'd be installing OS 10.3 and Classic on the drive so I can run apps off my G3 laptop when I travel.

Thanks for any help!

I own two FW 400 enclosures from www.macsales.com and they have served me very well. I assume their FW 800 enclosures are just as good.

I bought the hard drives separately - it's very easy to install them and saves $$. Keep an eye on www.dealmac.com for rebate specials.

I would also check with www.wiebetech.com

I believe both companies sell enclosures that include USB 2.0, FW 400, and FW 800 ports, so future compatibility shouldn't be a problem.
