i've been through three firewire hd enclosures, all different brands, since february. why are these things so unreliable???

the drive: western digital caviar 200gb

first enclosure was a compucable fireexpress 350. it had a problem of not mounting the drive sometimes, or randomly spinning it up and down, removing the drive from the desktop without warning. it would spin down the drive in the middle of a file transfer! not good.

the second one was an ads pyro. i couldn't even get the drive to show up using it, even though they said it supported any size drive. what a piece of crap!

the third one was an owc mercury elite. this one worked great, flawless in fact, for about a month. then the other day, it mysteriously disappeared from the desktop (while inactive), and i noticed a red led was lit up right behind the blue power/disk activity led. i thought that was odd. then i powered the drive down, and the red led stayed on for about 2 seconds before fading away. i contacted owc tech and they said it indicated that the circuit board was receiving improper voltage from the power supply. so they are rma'ing that one right now.

i mean, wtf!!! why are these things so flaky?
