Just ordered a new 40 Gigger for myself. Giving my old 5 gig to a PC friend. He plans to install a firewire card / load i Tunes for Windows on his Dell.

Will the original 5 Gig iPod work just fine? Anything extra to do???

I've heard of folk turning a Windows iPod to a Mac verion, but not the other way around. If it's possible, there's a iPod updater for Windows on Apple's site that will do it.

So there are hardware differences that would preclude old 5 gig Mac iPod > Windows via firewire & iTunes???

If I had the latest version of iPod SW & iTunes...aren't I safe???

It's the format of the iPod's drive. Now I don't fully get all of this, but I believe that an iPod for a Mac has a HFS+ formatted drive, while a Windows iPod has a FAT32 formatted drive. If your iPod was used on a Mac previously, a Windows machine wouldn't see the files stored on it unless the drive was reformatted.

Now, how it gets formatted and how the iPod software is installed on it I have no clue. Hopefully someone better suited will chime in on this topic.

You can format it pretty eaily, and the Ipod software is just the downloadable updater - download the windows version (1.31?) and then use it to format the ipod - I can vaguely recall it coming with the programs I think.

You may also be able to reformat the drive using Disk Utility. It, however, doesn't always give the option set the heirarchy to FAT32, maybe I'm missing something.

I'd try reformatting it on the Windows machine first with the iPod Updater software as some of the others suggested. My response seems kind of like a last ditch effort.

So seems like I need to tell my Dell PC friend to:

1. Install his fire wire card
2. Install iTunes for windows
3. Install the iPod updater for win XP - forthe iPod w/out the dock.

Concurrently, I need to reformat the old 5 gig iPod - i.e. clean it off for him to attempt his first synch up with iTunes?

Does that sound correct?

Thanks all!!!
