I've got an original 5 gig iPod that I bought just after it came out and my battery is still going strong. I'm sure it's possible to kill the battery sooner with lots of use.

Anyone know how many power cycles the iPod's battery is good for?

Actually it IS fact that the sony battery used in the ipod (or at least original ones) is only made to be recharged 50 times.

You call it fact or not it IS true. Whether they actually last that long or not your mileage may vary. Apple sells the ipod fully knowledged on this one.

50 times?

Yeah, right.

Rechargeable batteries are designed to be recharged hundreds of times, and can last far longer than that under optimal conditions.

Well, what does Apple have to say about this? Surely if it's FALSE, they would be quick to put the fear to rest.

I'll keep my mind open to this until I hear otherwise from Apple.

...

Is the iPod a disposable MP3 player?

Biggest load of BS I've ever read. My original iPod is still going strong after what must be a couple hundred charges by now. Battery life has probably shortened a bit, but not so much that I'm complaining yet. I was just glad to see Apple offer a battery replacement service for those people who are afraid to pop open their iPod.

If you want to talk crappy rechargeable batteries, let's talk about the shite one that came with my cordless phone...

I call BS.

2 years and 2 weeks later, I still get at least 4-5 hours before the last tick of the battery disappears. It gets plugged in my powerbook twice a day, almost everyday for synchronizing, etc. 50 charge max my aluminum arse.

Cool video. Wrong message. Shame about Apple's battery replacement fee, though.
I, ASIMO.

I would be highly suspicious of that claim, sounds like a load of crap in my opinion. I've never had problems like that with ANY rechargeable battery.

I recall reading that the battery was rated for 500 charges before any noticable drop in usage. Mine (5GB) still goes strong all day at the office.
