Does anyone have any info or tips on how to open up one of these? Apple has hidden their service manuals and I can't figure out how to do anything other than remove the stand.

Thanks in advance for any real info.

If you don't know what you're doing when it comes to CRTs then I'd highly recommend not opening them at all. Even unplugged, the internals retain an electrical charge that's powerful enough to kill you.

Totally agree with Q on this one. A qualified technician should be the only person working on a CRT....

I asked for instructions on opening the case - not working on the CRT or the electronics (which I've done to other monitors). Thanks for your concern.

It isn't the shock of the 25,000 volts that hurts, it's scraping your hand on the chassis as you pull it back that smarts.

Why would you open it if not to work on it?

Thanks for the link, bmhome1. Unfortunately, the links for what I require are non-existant. This is true of all the sites I know where service manuals used to be available.

K-mart, why do you care what I want to do with my monitor? It is my monitor and my life and I'll do with them what I please.

Just so no one else is tempted to be a wiseguy, I want to open it to use compressed air to get the dust off the electronic components. Dust buildup = heat buildup = shorter component life. I do this proceedure with all of my computers, CRTs, and TVs. That's why my 1987 Sony TV is still working and has only been in the shop once.

I've done it and it's a pain in the ass. I can't remember how exactly it was done, but I was even able to put it all back together without having extra screws. The key was getting off the outer part around the screen (the part with the apple logo).

I got TV's older then that Sony, never been cleaned and never been in the shop. Where did you hear about this dust buildup kills electronics bit?

Dust buildup = less air circulation = warmer components = less life
