I am a high school student about to go to college and I was looking to get a mp3 player. The IPod looks awesome with its sleekness, ease of use, and nice scroll wheel. However, I am concerned about its 18 month battery life and relatively steep price. I have also heard of creative labs' 60GB mp3 player for $350, which sounds nice for the price. I would appreciate some input into the decision of what mp3 player, out of any out there, to get.

My iPod is two years old and I've had no battery problems.
Apple will replace, free of charge, any iPod battery that stops working during the warranty. And out of warranty, Apple will replace it for $100. You can also buy AppleCare to extend the warranty and battery replacement service. Or, you buy the battery and install it yourself for only about $60.
If those "dirty secret" guys had spent five minutes searching "Ipod battery replacement" on Google, they wouldn't have to have made their little movie.

I would say get an ipod. Did you notice that every review of every Mp3 player is always pitted against the ipod? I wouldn't sweat the battery stories, Apple has already offered a solution to fix it if and when it happens(for a $100). A larger HD is cool but the benefits of the ipod's design and itunes integration outweigh any capacity issues IMO. I mean how much space do you really need?

If you already have a Mac (or even now that iTunes for PC came out) there is really no better option than an iPod. WIth a Mac you will run into problems with support for other MP3 players. The Rio line seems to have decent support but other than that you might have issues loading MP3s onto your player easily.
They aren't cheap but what you are willing to pay for ease of use.
I won't say this often but CompUSA has a better warranty program for the iPod than Apple does. So it may be your best option though you won't get the refub discounts.
