A guy asked me to look at his daughter's 20GB second gen iPod. When it boots, the Apple logo appears, then a picture of a folder with an exclamation mark. if I plug in the firewire cable, the Apple logo appears, then the ! folder, Apple logo, ! folder, then a magnifying glass over a disk, then a sad iPod face:

If I put the iPod to my ear, I can hear the hard drive clicking a little, like it's trying to spin. Could it just be that she dropped it? Or unplugged it without ejecting numerous times? I tried forced firewire mode, and the Apple logo just stays on...blinks off for a split second...stays on... so apparently that's not working. When I restart it and boot into debug mode, HDD SCAN returns "HDD FAIL". That's not a happy thing... Any suggestions?

On the upside, the Sad iPod made a nice 1024x768 wallpaper...

I'm hoping that the clicking I hear inside is normal. My 40GB iPod has a slight click as well. I think that what she did was unplug it without unmounting the iPod. I opened up the little beast just to check it out and see if anything else was amiss. I looked up the hard drive on Toshiba's site to see if I could power up the drive myself and hear it spin. Where's pin 1 on the drive? They don't say on that page as far as I can tell, and I see no markings on the drive to indicate it. The connector Apple (well...DDK) made for the drive has "1" labeled on the ribbon cable, but it goes to like the 5th pin in, which just couldn't be pin 1... It would be nice to be able to start the drive myself and hear it spin so I know that something physically stopping the drive from working isn't the issue.

That's forced firewire mode... when I do that, the Apple logo appears, blinks, appears...several times. After that, I get the disk icon above, then the sad iPod. :-(

Are you pressing the Previous and Next buttons when the Apple logo appears?

Sorry, I don't know what else to tell you. Try taking it to a nearby Apple store and have them check it out.

Yeah, I've tried it several times and the Do Not Disconnect never appears. The disk icon appears, then the sad iPod.
