So i just spent 6+ hours retouching a photo of a deceased relative to hopefully get a nice restored print without having to take it to a pro place. On screen everything is looking great and balanced (i realize there are calibration / translation issues) and then went to print it out of Photoshop ... holy sh!t that sucks. I know photoshop has bad printing translation, but this was insane: very cyan, blurry and washed out.
Next i laid it out in Freehand MX and had all the paper and quality settings the same. This time it was very red and way too dark. I was starting to get a bit irate because i just spent alot of time doing this perfectly and i know my printer is good (Canon i960).
As a last ditch effort i printed the photo out of Preview.app and it was perfect. It was a nearly exact translation of what i thought it should look like! The color balance was just right and it was as clear as the original scan. I thought i would share that with anyone who has had output problems from OS X.
Does anyone else have happy endings to sad printing stories?

That's very interesting. I wonder if this has to do with Preview being properly set up to use ColorSync, and the 3rd party apps not?
Good to know though!

Yes. I spent 5 years printing 8x10 photos on various Epson printers only having them turn out the way they should 3 out of 10 tries.
Then, 6 months ago I dumped the thing and FINALLY got a Canon i950. Since I have been in printing heaven with 100% of prints looking perfect and the software always works.

Yes! Down with Epson! Those bastards turned my Epson Photo 1200 into a paperweight since they decided not to write OS X drivers for it. I finally got rid of it a little while ago, and am going to get another printer soon. And those Canons are looking pretty damn good.

Maroma - i was wondering that too. Or perhaps it has better PDF translators as Photoshop and Freehand may still output in PS and then get converted somewhere. Either way it's something to try!
LM - you were the reason i got the i960. Thanks.
