I'm new to Macs (2 weeks now), and I love it so far! I have an Epson Perfection 1200U. I installed on my previous Windows machine, but I'd like some guidance before I try to install it on the Mac (PowerBook) with Panther.

I read in one thread that Panther has built-in support for this particular printer, but I'm not exactly sure what that means, in terms of installation. So, what do I need to do?

The CD that came with the scanner lists Mac OS 8.5.1 as a minimum requirement. So, do I need to install the CD? Or do I need to get newer software? Is there a free upgrade available or will I have to buy newer software?

Thanks in advance!

How old is your printer? Normally system requirements that say Mac OS 8.5 and above don't include Mac OS X.

For instance, most OS X compatible products will say "Mac OS 8.5, 9, 9.2 and Mac OS X 10.2"

Is OS X listed anywhere?

Drivers that come on CD are often way out of date (or even just for OS 9) - check the manufacturer's site.

Epson are pretty good with their scanner drivers:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...Type=Downloads

look about half way down for the item called Twain Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v1.28A

Don't bother with the epson scan utility app - I'd use Image Capture instead.

Thanks a lot! That's what I wanted to know. So, let me make sure I have this straight:
> Plug-in scanner
> Download Driver
Or do I need to download the driver first? Sorry, I've never done it this way; I'm used to inserting disc, then following directions!

Doesn't really matter But it's possible that your scanner needs to be plugged in again for the driver to recognize it. Just do the driver first then plug in and have fun with it !

I'd plug it in and hit the scan button a couple times. It might be supported by Image Capture automagically. If that doesn't do the trick, just download the latest drivers.

Yes, Image Panther has built-in support for my scanner. Just plugged it in, and turned on the scanner, and it scanned my document.

Okay, is there a built-in OCR scan utility for text, or just for images?

Thanks again!

Alas - no there is no OCR built-in.

You have to use a 3rd party app like OmniPage Pro or ReadIris Pro
