I have a 1G 10 GB iPod. I recently had it at the gym on a treadmill (my mistake) and it froze. This time after reseting it I got the flashing circle with a line through it and the text is in a foreign language. Resetting no longer helps. I plugged it in to my G4 and iTunes recognizes it and opens but I can't make changes to the playlists. When I eject it the circle with line changes to the check mark. However I cannot turn it off now. I tried to do the restore using iPod software updater but it does not recognize the iPod when I plug it in. Are there any other tricks I can try before sending it in to Apple. How much does a repair typically cost?

thanks

Maybe could you initialize it using the Disk Utility and then install the software? No idea if that's valid.
