I have a 250gb external hard drive which will be primarily used for video capture and editing. I see a lot of talk about installing OSX on external hard drives. Could someone please explain why this would be beneficial. Or, in my case, since I will be using this drive for video, why it may NOT be beneficial?

It is useful because it is like taking your computer with you.You can just boot from any Mac and your data/programs are there. But I do not see why you would want to unless you needed iMovie or Finalcut with you.

So, if I do not anticipate using another mac with this hard drive, it is not needed? Are there any downsides to having OSX on the drive? From the info I have gathered partitioning is not the way to go. I thought I had read in some posts that it is best to capture to a drive that does not have the OS installed on it??? Or maybe it was that I should not capture to the boot drive? I am getting ready to capture a bit of footage to this drive and don't want to find out later that I should have gone ahead and installed Panther on it. Thanks!

No idea, I do not do a lot of video on my Mac. You should post to the Digital Video forum and not in here. The people who would know read that forum.

If you're going to use it to capture and edit DV, definitely don't use the drive for anything else. That puts it through a real workout.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.
