Just ordered a new Powerbook with Bluetooth and would like to have a nice bluetooth mouse to use with it. However, I don't want a base station. It looks like the MX900 has a base station (like the MX700 which I use with my desktop system), which defeats the purpose for me. It appears as though the Apple mouse doesn't, but it just doesn't have enough buttons for me (although uControl sounds like it might help a little).

My question is, can the MX900 work without the base station except for charging purposes? Or is the base station required for normal operation as well?

TIA

From reading their web site, it looks like the charging station is also the bluetooth hub. I'd imagine it would work with another bluetooth adaptor but you'd still need the charging station for the mouse anyway. But even if you'd put the station somewhere not visible, it should still work thanks to the range of BT.

The base station can be used just for charging. The mouse works with the Bluetooth adapter in the powerbook, although you might want to search the forum for MX900 as people have had mixed results. Mine works perfectly, albeit without the additional buttons (only the initial two buttons and scroll wheel). OS X recognizes the other buttons and most people use them for Expose. Some people complain of jerky movement of the MX900. Again, search the forums for MX900.

The hub itself does not work with macs, so I just use it as a charger.
