OK, I already did a search, and some of the posts are months old. Has anyone ever actually tried the expensive ($149) Altec speaker/system for an ipod?

www.http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...lqb/1.3.0.5.10

That should be the link, but I'm not sure...

Anyway, one of the posts said they're great -- for a $75 set, which is half what this thing costs. And the JBLs look nice, too. My husband would like external speakers for his ipod (firewire, not the dock -- I think that's 2nd
generation), so I'm looking around. If those Altecs are great, I'd probably get that, but boy, are they expensive.

I haven't heard them. However, I am impressed with the sound of my Apple Pro Speakers, so I'm opting for the Griffin iFire so that I can play my tunes through them at the office. I'm only out 35 bucks that way, unless I buy another set of speakers, then I'm out 80 bucks.

Dumb question -- what's the Griffin ifire? I looked on the apple store but couldn't find it.

never mind -- googled it and found it. I'm just looking for external speakers, not to hook to a computer, just to wherever. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

The iFire doesn't nessesarily hook the speakers to a computer. Its sole purpose is to allow the Apple Pro Speakers to be connected to a device other than a PowerMac or iMac, like an iPod, where the FireWire port can be used for power. Oh, its also an amplifier.
From Griffin's Site:
The iFire connects to any computer with FireWire and a mini jack audio output. It then provides power and audio to the Apple Pro Speakers. Now these great sounding beautiful speakers aren't just for iMacs anymore.

altec speakers are GREAT. now don't except the deep rich low bass tones, but the sound quality is crisp and clear. mids and highs are excellent. a bit pricey, but i think theyre worth it if you want a portable setup.

the speakers fold down into a flat unit and also comes with a nice carryingbag. the apple stores in the bay area (california) have been sold out for weeks but it looks like theyre finally in stock right now.

i managed to finally buy one today and i love it.

anyone know if the iFire supplies power via Firewire, or if it has its own power source?

If it doesn't add another plug to my collection, i will get it.

I am sick of missing the mid-range on my Creatures.

FYI,
The creative travelsound speakers, at about 1/2 the cost of the AL's, also sound quite good (save the deep base tones).

I use mine all the time. They will fill a small room with decent sound and are very small.
