i tried to see the SMART status of my firewire drive, but when i issue the command, nothing comes back. there are three possibilities i can think of:

1) for some reason, this can't be accessed on a firewire drive.

2) SMART status is checked and stored on boot-up, and i've never had this drive turned on at boot time (due to all the crazy firewire drive problems that OS X has had recently)

3) my hard drive doesn't support it. unlikely, since it's a new western digital 200gb.

the command is:

diskutil info disk1 | grep SMART

(if your firewire drive isn't disk1, do "diskutil list" to find out which drive number it is)

thanks,
ben

AFAIK it doesn't cause these are only supported if you connect an IDE drive directly. Those extra signals are not transmitted via FireWire.

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported

I've been using an external 400GB Seagate harddrive + RETROSPECT as my main back up hardware and software for my G4 1GHz 15" Titatnium Powerbook running OSX 10.4.6 for the past six months.

After completing my most recent backup last Monday, my SEAGATE harddrive icon does not show up. I ran both Apple's Disk Utility as well as DISK WARRIOR ver. 3.03 in order to rebuild my DIRECTORY on the external Seagate.......however, NO LUCK!

Can anyone provide a viable solution on how to rebuild my Seagate's Directory so that it can be read by my G4 Powerbook?
