Alright. I need an AAC player, and its seems there is no, not one alternative to the iPod on the Mac. How wise of Apple to have iTunes rip to AAC by default!

Anyway, I can't afford a new one, so I'm going to look on eBay or do without. That's what this poll is about, because I've heard some worrying stuff about battery life. So, how long have you had your iPod or are you on your second battery?

Bought mine in August 2002 and it's still going strong.

Also, the better quality AAC means you can fit more music on your iPod than with mp3.

Classic 1st gen 5GB. The controls on the old model were much better than the touch sensitive nonsense.

Mine is a little over a year old and it's still doing great, the battery is not as good as it used to be but it's still good enough for me, you're not going to listen to it for 10 hours at a time and charging is very fast and easy...

My battery is not going as good as it used to, but:

In Germany I had to commute 3 hours a day, constantly listening to my iPod, definitely above average use.

I'll get it replaced when I get back home

I bought my iPod on Aug/2002
iPod 10GB (touch-wheel which the case and remote)

After 16 months of usage, I tried to do a little battery test last night.

I loaded the iPod to around 300 songs (about 24 hrs of playback), set the contrast and volume to the middle. Sound check was on and the equalizer set to classic. The songs were mixed with MP3 and AAC (ranged from 128k to 320k.. most are 160k AAC)

I turned it at 7:30pm and let it run. At around 2am, only one battery level left but still running. Then I went bed to sleep. I woke up.. the battery ran out (of course).. I hooked it up to my PowerMac and hopefully I could check the milage for one charge by reading those "Last played" counts... However, the iPod lost all info after the battery ran out.

Can someone please advice me how to really check the battery in a better way? Apple claimed that the older generation iPod can enjoy a 10-hour non-stop playback.

Just ran a battery benchmark on it. Battery still lasts 8+ hours (wasn't empty after two loooong bus rides). Battery was heavily used (see above).

Great, I love this thing.

I can get about 7-8 hours out of my 15 month old 10GB iPod. I used to be able to get over 10, but it has been getting a little bit weaker.
