I can't select a song on my iPod because it is (for some inexplicable reason) continuously and rapidly moving down the song list as if I were manipulating the scroll wheel, which I'm not!

This means it's too busy cycling the list to play a %$^#&! song. Arrrrgh!!! Any insights? Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

1. turn on hold switch

2. making sure to not touch any of the touch-sensitive controls, release the hold switch

if that doesn't work, reset the iPod by holding down the play and menu buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
