Sorry this is probably a stupid question, but I'm swapping a dvd drive out of the firewire enclosure I bought for it and putting an ide harddrive in and after about 10 minutes of tearing my fingers up and wiggling away at the power connector (the exact same type you would see inside the computer, I don't know the technical name, but the one with 4 wires that run into a white plastic thing that plugs into the drive and gives it power). Someone must know. is there a better way to pull these things out? Why is it so hard? whats the deal with the funny little triangle shapped wings on the sides that hurt my fingers so bad?
any answers would be awesome. thanks guys

i'm not even sure what holds them in the plug, but yes, they're extremely hard to get out (on top of being a bit sharp). they do take a fair bit of wiggling, especially if you don't have much room to tug (such as in a cramped firewire enclosure). the best advice i can give is to keep wiggling, eventually it'll come out.

edit: forgot to say, they're called Molex connectors

A pair of long nose pliers will usually free up ones that are really stuck. Just be careful that you don't crack the connector.

Well, Molex is just the company that designed that particular connector; Molex makes all sorts of connectors beside it. (I'm sure it has a proper name.)

Those evil power plugs... gah!

Yeah... those guys seem to have a monopoly.. hrmm ;-)

I have found that really long, thin, flat-head screw drivers work for just about any plug removal... provided they are not magnitized (just in case!!) and you are gentle.
yep.

Actually, even though it's the name of the maker of those plugs, it's also been the "proper name" for ATA Hardware 4-pin power plugs since the days of the original IBM PC's and Apple II's. Think the ubiquity of Q-tip and Xerox brands vs. "proper name", but without a generic name available in this case.
