"The most urgent question for today is flat computer displays. OLED technology has practically reached the stage when it can invade this market, too. One step in this direction was the demonstration of a prototype of 20” full-color OLED-based display by International Display Technology (IDTech), a joint venture of the Japanese division of IBM and Taiwanese display maker - Chi Mei."
from the excellent article:

if IBM is in it, so will Apple?...

I wouldn't count on OLED panels appearing in Apple's display lineup for a long time. The linked article mentioned difficulty getting the resolution up, and the 20" OLED prototype sits at 1280x768 compared to Apple's current 20" res of 1680x1050. Furthermore, there are still problems to be worked out with the technology, like the fact that the blue elements fade a lot faster than the red and green ones.
Price would be the final factor, as it took years for LCDs to some down in price. The original 22" Apple Cinema Display was $4000 when it was first introduced, and now you can get the 23" Cinema Display for half that with better resolution and pixel response times. OLED is good for smaller screens like on phones, PDAs, and car stereos, but as a large display technology LCD has life left in it. I'll eat crow if Apple introduces OLED displays in 2004, but the technology and price factors aren't in place at this time to make it happen.

yeah, honestly, i don't think it's time. manufacturers are still having trouble making large size OLED displays. i mean, if there's a manufacturer who can have good yields of large size OLED displays, then they probably have no problem making small displays, and if that's so, i'm sure we would've seen more of these displays in small devices, like cell phones and such.
apparently sony has just announced that they will intro a OLED screened clié next spring. the screen will be around 3 or 4 inches, and sony said that they had to overcome manufacturing problems to get screen sizes that large.

No argument necessary, the article gives a time estimate.
Still, OLEDs have a long way to go before the technology behind them and the price make them ready to replace liquid crystals altogether. By the unanimous opinion, it will be no sooner than ten years
So no, I am not counting on seeing this technology in an Apple display this year.
