I"m starting work again, and my first goal is a G5. Now i have a 17" iMac and i love the widescreen and i really really would miss it. So my question is, what are some good budget displays that are LCDs and also are widescreen. Right now the apple ones are just way out of my league...so any help would be great!!

Unfortunately I haven't really found an easy answer to this one. The samsung 172W is widescreen, but you don't get very much more resolution (1280x768) than a standard 15". Post here if you find any other screens. I'm looking for a good widescreen as well (maybe apple will introduce a 17" widescreen at MWSF?

There have been lots of rumors on new LCDs from Apple at cheaper prices. Not sure how much of a hurry you're in, but you might want to wait at least till the end of January.
There are other reasons to wait, too. LCD demand has been outstripping supply, keeping prices high. This has been going on for at least the last quarter if not the last two quarters, so my guess is that production will be ramping up and price pressure should ease in the coming months. Everybody wants LCDs now. I expect the prices will drop quite a bit in 2004 and the selection will increase dramatically.
One more thing. I had two friend buy LCD monitors in the last few months: one bought a budget model, the other bought a name brand professional model (Viewsonic 191b). The cheap monitor developed a stuck pixel in the first two months. The other is still perfect. LCD costs are in the quality of the screen, the rest of the components aren't that expensive. These screens are binned into quality groupings and sold accordingly. In other words, you get what you pay for. (Of course, Apple and Formac also add some fat margin, too.)
I'm in the market, too, but I'm waiting for the right product at the right price. Until then, I'll suffer with my 19" Mitsubishi behemoth.

Why exactly "end of January"? I'm waiting and waiting and there's nothing new, neither from Apple nor Formac. The only thing that keeps me from buying a Formac 2010 right now, is the aspect ratio. I have seen the 20" ACD, it's gorgeous, but also beginning to look a bit "old".

have you seen Sony's pricing?

Probably b/c Jan. 24th was the superbowl broadcast date of the 1984 commercial. Rumors are starting that Apple may do something on that date to commemorate the 20th anniversary.

And isn't 'budget widescreen LCD' an oxymoron?
I have a nice Dell 18" that I got for US$400 that serves nicely for now. You may want to check and see what sales they're offering. Although I don't know if they sell a widescreen or not...

I have both the 2010 and the ADC 20 connected to my Dual G5. Each has it's strengths:
Apple 20":
Truely white white.
Good color reproduction.
Bright
2010:
Good Color reproduction.
More pixel space (1600*1200)
Fast refresh - great for gaming.
Bright.
If I didn't do alot of gaming and had to choose one, I'd probably go with the Apple 20; barely. But if you game, the 2010 is the way to go.
My 2 cents.

Widescreen
Sorry, been posted before, and most certainly not a budget solution. But pretty cool non-the-less.
-Q- brings up a good point. Budget and widescreen are rarely in the same sentence. Thankfully that's changing, but not soon enough for my likes.
