three days ago I went to my local Apple store and purchased a d2 120. I had called previously and asked the guy to tell me why I should purchase that particular drive and not another, to which he informed me that LaCies were unbelievably reliable and he's never heard any complaints.

I get the drive, open it and am up and running in about 5 minutes. all good, right?

I left it on the first night and i constantly heard the drive doing a sort of quiet spin/click every few minutes. the next day i formatted the drive into 3 partitions and split up my ripped movies, music and random files into the three segments.

now recently the main drive i'm using for transferring and downloading keeps unmounting randomly. the drive has actually shut off by itself three times (blue light shuts off) and i've had to push the blue button to start it up again.

just now i was playing Jedi Academy on MP...when i quit out of the game, i noticed the HD had shut itself off.

to make things worse, I've contacted the Apple Store that i've purchased it from...they refuse to swap it out until they've "tested" it for 24 hours. I asked them what testing entailed and he couldn't tell me, and couldn't find anyone to explain it to me. I then asked him how he was going to replicate what I was doing daily...he said it should be easy b/c it's random.

suggestions?

after testing, this seeems to occur (drive dismount) when the computer is idle...so when i go to sleep and wake up, the drive and partitons have dismounted and remount once i make the comp active again (this occurs whether the computer is asleep or not)

also, i just woke up...and as i was typing this, i heard a loud click and the drive just shut down.

surely people have experience with hard drives, let alone lacies...can someone please respond with ideas?

What type of Mac and OS are you using? I had a few problems with Firewire drives on a TiBook 400 and it turned out to be the Firewire controller. Have you tried any other drives to see if the same problem occurs?

What do you mean the drive shuts down? Do you mean it stops spinning or that it actually disappears off the desktop when you are using your computer.
