ignoring the ipod mini, which is overpriced, i was waiting for today to order my brand spanking new ipod from apple. i wanted at least 20 gigs, but what do they do? stick the 15 where the 10 was and leave the other two in their places. does this make any sense to you? i have 13 gigs of music on my computer right now. i can buy
a. 15 gigs $300
b. 20 gigs $400
c. 40 gigs $500
i need more than the 15 but wont spend an extra $100 for just 5 extra gigs of space. apple screwed up on this one and wont be getting my money until the next update. oh well.

I have a 10GB iPod that I bought a month before Apple released the 20GB one for a similar price. I was a little upset about that but realise that these things happen.

Your statement about the iPod pricing being wrong is based on what? Apple are going to charge what they think the market will stand for the product. They are certainly going to try and maximise the profit they make from them. Given the reports of iPod shortages over the holiday season it would seem that Apple has got the pricing right. All that's happened is that they've bumped up the spec on the base model. If they hadn't do that you'd still have to pay $400 for the 20GB one.

The iPod mini is priced to be comparable with the flash based MP3 players out there. As such it should sell well. Expect a drop in price in around 6 months when larger cheap flash devices hit the market.

It never ceases to amaze me that people on these boards complain that Apple wants to sell things to make a profit.

Try being in the UK, the 15GB ipod costs £248 (inc VAT @17.5%), which translates to (basically) $450. $150 more than in the US and every other country I've looked at. I don't know if its Apple or just our own government, but someone is royally screwing us brits.

Dont be so bitter.. You screwed up a little yourself here..

There are more differences between the 15 and 20gig iPods than you appear to be aware of. So other than the extra 5gigs of storage space, you get.. A proper dock cradle and a remote. Now the extra $ doesnt seem so steep does it..

You said it: inc. 17.5% VAT; Apple Store US prices do not include sales tax as it varies from state to state. Much closer when you look at Apple UK's prices excluding VAT.

As to the original post; with the 20GB you get wired remote, dock and belt clip which are a not inconsiderable expense in themselves.

Referring to the original post, would you have rather they did nothing to the iPod line and you could choose from:
a. 10 gigs $300
b. 20 gigs $400
c. 40 gigs $500

Just think of it as a free 5Gb. Doesn't give quite as much of an incentive to get the 20Gb aside from the accessories:
-iPod Dock ($39.00)
-iPod Carrying Case with Belt Clip
($39.00)
-iPod Remote & Earphones ($39.00)

In the end you still save if you plan on buying the accessories that it comes with in the future.

excluding sales taxes
................UK Price....US Price
15GB........£211........£166 (in pound sterling)
................$384 ........$299 (in US dollars)

Its not just down to VAT, its more expensive even before its taxed in the UK. Its the same across the range, about £50 ($90) more than everyone else pays, then we also get taxed on that extra £50.

sorry if I keep hijacking this post, I just wanted to clarify my first post. I'll leave it alone now

Ha! That's nothing. In denmark we have 25% sales tax, a iPod with 15Gb costs £252 = $430

But about the pricing, then as another poster said, you do get a lot more accessories with the 20 Gb model than the 15Gb.

I wonder if you can get around the higher pricing in Europe by buying off eBay users in the US.

I already explained how you screwed up. Read my post again if you must. But to recap, you were moaning about how you don't want to spend the extra $100 'just' for an extra 5gig of space. All I did was point out, that 5gigs extra is not all you get for another $100. The other extra's are significant to most people. So if you really 'value your money' then I am sure they are significant to you also.
And quite right, I do live in England where they charge more for iPods. However, It was not me pointing that out or complaining about it, but someone else.
