Is the new iPod mini both pc and mac compatible? Will the same model work on both platforms?
I looked at the Apple website and didn't see separate models...so I assume the mini would work on both Windows and OS X?

Bound to be. Can't imagine it wouldn't be. Software for both will presumably come in the box (or be available for download if they box Windows and Mac versions separately). Just like the 3G iPod.

Did anybody even bother to check http://www.apple.com/ipodmini ?
Everything you love about iPod just got tinier. iPod mini lets you bring along enough music for a three-day weekend getaway in a package so small you’ll forget you’re carrying it. Until people ask you about it, that is. Available on Mac and Windows for just $249.

Another question then:
If I buy a mini... preload it with my own mp3 collection...using a mac...
can it be used later on a pc? or does the software have to be reinstalled and the information/music lost?

Unfotunately...it's one or the other. If you load eveything with your Mac...then take it over to the PC, you will have to reset the iPod, and format it for use with Windows. And vice versa...

I use my iPod with both my G5 at work and a Sony VAIO at home. I use a piece of software called MacDrive to allow the PC to see the Mac-formatted iPod, and from there you just use iTunes and load songs up. The same company also offers XPlay, which does the same thing at a cheaper price.

Very cool...do you have a link to that software. I did not know something like that existed!

If you initially set up your iPod as a Windows iPod, you can use it both on the Mac and PC. You can not sync more than one library, but if windows formatted (actually fat32), you can use the iPod as a firewire drive on both windows and mac.
I do it, use a windows at work, and mac at home (with my mp3 library).
