I had a new 40gig delievred last week. All was working fine until last night. I tried to do an update of some songs and the IPod didn't mount on the desktop.

I Tried resetting, I tried pressing the previous and next buttons together as per Apple Support but instead of coming up with the message "do not disconnect" it said "ok to disconnect" and then it frezzes until I do another reset.

I've checked disk utility and the IPod doesn't show up.

I've also tried it in a new account and also on a different computer but still, the IPod won't mount.

The IPod still plays so I don't want to send it away if there's an easy fix.

It's got the silly new dock - firewire lead and I only have one so I can't check the lead but it does charge when it's plugged in and the support from the store I purchased it from said that it's therefore unlikely to be the FW lead.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there any other way to force it to mount via the terminal or something?

I have tried to do a software update but because the Mac can't see the IPod it won't let me do so.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Michael

Will it mount onto someone else's mac? That would be one way to determine whether it's the iPod or the Mac that's being stubborn. Also, just b/c it's charing does not mean it could not be the lead, bring it into a Mac store and see if will mount on that and use a different lead and your own lead. After that, well, I don't know a about a quick fix, I'd send it back. Good luck.

Yeh, I tried on a different Mac. still no luck I can't find an Apple store in the UK so I'm sort of stuck.

The store I bought it from have said that they will examine it and then send it out to Apple for repair if it's broken.

I demanded that they look at it and if broken then they give me a new one. I don't want to hang around for ages waiting for it to come back from Apple. They sort of said ok and that we can discuss it when they've looked at it.

There is no 'Apple Store' as such here in the UK.. John Lewis and Micro Anvika on Tottenham court road is about the closest we got in London.
Could still be a bad cable.. try that. i've had a bad FireWire cable before (Not an an iPod though) took me fookin ages to sniff out the cause of the problem I had then..
Anyway Schuey, get back to the SOS forums you dirty rotten scoundrel!

I remember reading that it was possible for the firewire to get damaged in such a way that the iPod would charge but not mount or be recognized by the computer.

This happened to my 5 gb iPod, but I don't know if it's still a possible problem with the new ones (I don't know how the dock connections work and such).
