None of the tricks at Apple's troubleshooting website works ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003 ) so I reckon I'll have to send it in for repairs. It is a three month old 20 GB iPod and still under warranty so no harm as such.

Last friday I'm listening to my music on the pod and change a song. Then the sound breaks and it's like listening to a scratched CD. I press pause and play again but it doesn't fix the problem. I try a different song but no go. So I restart the pod and then everything went to hell. The Apple was displayed and a clicking sound (loud) inside the ipod. It just kept on clicking until the folder with the exclamation mark showed up and the iPod restarts itself. Then it went on in circles like that until the battery ran out.

Anyone had this problem or similar? Is it common that relatively new iPods just die on you??

Sounds like the HD gave up the ghost. They're small drives, and failures do happen.

Same thing happened to me when I got hit by a car while riding my bike, and I fell on the iPod. Flattened the HD a bit... I got a pretty sad looking icon :/
