The Logitech Z-680 has all the features I want, but I'd rather have a 2.1 system, since I have no room to justify a full 5.1 system.
Now, who delivers speakers that match the Z-680 in quality and punch, and sports optical input to take advantage of the G5 output?

Usually the optical input is a feature of amps, not of the speakers themselves.
Use it with a stereo. A real stereo.

CatOne,
take a look at the speakers image gallery at the ipod studio You'll find it in the "photos" section, linked on the left side of the homepage.
There are over 50 different sets referenced there, some high end, some more standard, with 2.1, 5.1, monitor and amped, there all there. You can post your question, there too, since that's their speciality subject. You'll also find about 20 odd reviews of different sets in the "links" section.
Cheers,
Duncan
