I have a iMac DV. Could I use it externally on my setup? Seems like a good deal. Would need to find a firewire case too.

short answer, no. Your best bet with respect to third party DVD burners supported by Apple and Mac OS is and always has been Pioneer.

WRT the 8x burners that are coming to market, Mac OS X currently doesn't support any of them, but go to accelerateyourmac.com to check out the reports. There are numerous reports of people getting it to work with the Patchburn utility.

The Pioneer drive i'm looking at it the DVR-107. 8x DVD-R and 8x DVD+R.
