Id on't have a camcorder or anything, and I haven't been able to figure out how to record video with my isight. Do I need a special app?

Thank you!

I know there are several methods to do this, one is iRecordNow; sorry no link, maybe someone else. But, iMovie four always you to use your iSight ass a camera to record video, unfortunately you'll need to buy iLife 4 for $50 or get a new Mac.

I tried the iRecordNow from Boinx and it's pretty good. Has a lot better control of the camera than iMovie, but since I ordered iLife anyway, I probably won't pay the shareware fee for Boinx's title.
Been thinking of getting a small digicam that would render the point moot.
BTW, both apps make the image proper in record mode, not the "mirror image" you get in iChat.

i played around with the iMovie 4 record from iSight yesterday and it works nicely. i don't think i will carry it around as a video camera, but for making some little movies it is perfect.

very good quality too.

Hi mdc,

I can't find how to record iSight movies in iMovie. Can you give a little insruction? When I open iMovie it asks if I want to create a new project or open an old one. If I choose Quit, it closes. I also don't see any instructions with iChat while iSight is connected. Tanks!

Hey PeterKG,

When you're prompted to start a new project when you open iMovie, just choose Yes and name it something.

Once iMovie is open, you should see a switch underneath the screen in iMovie's main window, slightly to the left. It has a video camera icon and a pair of scissors. Slide it towards the camera icon and you're good to go. A set of controls appears underneath the iMovie screen that allows you to Record.

My question is for mdc. You mentioned that your quality was good when you recorded in iMovie. My framerate seems to drop out (i'm recording myself playing the guitar, and the strumming on my hand stutters every now and then, and I'm not going crazy on the strings either.) Any ideas?

Even the full DV quality export stutters. What's more, the aspect ratio is stretched horizontally. What's with that?

Thanks

Not in a position to test right now, so will ask the group. Does all this also mean I can record a video chat as well? I video chat with my grandsons, and would love to record that. Will iMovie work for that too? How would I set it up?

Thanks in advance!
Mary
