Dead iPod?

First I'd like to say this happened to my sister's iPod, not mine.

Anyway, this iPod was apparently repeatedly dropped from a height of several feet onto a concrete floor. Believe it or not, the iPod is experiencing some problems. The major problem is that the iPod is constantly displaying the Apple logo, then it flashes to an image of a folder with a little caution sign next to it. Pressing buttons does not do anything (hold is not on, either). I plugged the iPod into my computer, and it read fine, so at least part of it is working. So I then dragged the little iPod icon into the trash, and the iPod said 'OK to disconnect', so I did. The iPod said 'OK to disconnect'. It wouldn't stop saying that until the battery died. After the battery died, I plugged it into the wall (via the weird adapter), and it gave me the Apple logo and folder thing again.

Is her iPod just dead and can't be fixed, or is there a solution?

www.ipodlounge.com.

i had troubles with my ipod. the only way i could get anything to happen was to totally wipe the thing and start over.

is the music backed up? if not, use ipod rip to get it all off. you have 10 free uses, so might as well use them.

what i did after that was to go in disk utility and erase the disk. from there i went into the ipod software updater (get it from apple) and restored (or something) the software on the drive.

if you can access the files when hooked up to a comp, i think youre in pretty good shape.

can you open itunes with the ipod connected? when mine went, if i even looked at itunes, i would get the KP "you need to restart your computer NOW" in all of those languages.

hope something in here was somewhat helpful.
Dan.

Well, I think restoring the software will be my best option.

Unfortunately, my sister and I like different kinds of music, so I had to rip the songs from her iPod to my computer. This would have worked fine, except I think there's something broken in the firewire plug in her iPod... She has 3.5 gigs of music, and it says 8 hours remaining. I might as well do it overnight, I suppose.

Um, I have some more problems now.
I backed up all of the music, and I went to restore the software. I clicked the restore button and all seemed to go well. But now, everytime I try to update the software, change the iPod's name, etc., it ejects itself, and I get an alert "You cannot update the iPod's software because it is not mounted on the desktop".

Help.

Edit: Incidentally, I can't even restore the software now. It ejects very quickly.

but it stays mounted long enough for you to try to reinstall the ipod software? what happens if you run diskutility, and then erase/reformat the disk? is that possible?

Oooh. Thanks, that worked. I think there must have been some bug in the software, and erasing it got rid of it.... Thanks.
