Curious what is the proper way to disconnect from external Firewire HD?

I turned it off and then unplugged it from my running TiBook . . . I'm curious if there is a more system friendly way to do this, that doesn't produce warning messages?

Eject all volumes first, then turn off or unplug.

Cheers, d'oh I don't know why I thought a firewire device would be any different from a network volume.

Be sure to run Disk First Aid or DiskWarrior on that drive if you've been unplugging it without ejecting first.

Are external drives ejected when one is logged out? How about sleep? I hate having to wake my PB, log in, and then eject the drives when I am going to put it right back to sleep to take with me.
