I just purchased a CanoScan LiDE 50 scanner. Seems to work fine, but the CanoScan software that ships with it leaves much to be desired:

1. When I launch CanoScan Toolbox, it immediately starts using all available CPU time on my PowerBook G4/867. How can I stop this?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

check you've got the lastest version of the toolbox and of the driver (updated yesterday)

If you really have problems with the toolbox, just install the driver as a plugin in your photoshop elements (or photoshop, or graphic converter), it will then appear in the "import" menu, and you'll be able to scan (maybe you'll loose the use of the fancy front buttons of your scanner, but it'll work)

I have all the latest stuff. It looks like the problem is the driver, NOT the toolbox. When I launched Photoshop Elements and opened a scan window, suddenly PE was using all available CPU time!

Does anybody know if Apples' image capture will work with Canon scanners?

I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with Canon tech support. The guy I spoke to tested the software on his Mac, but said that CanoScan toolbox uses 0% CPU time while it is open!

I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling the Toolbox and the driver -- but it made no difference.

Do other Canon LiDE scanner owners see this problem as well?
