An hour ago, I purchased my 3rd iPod in the last 4 weeks. Once again, it has broken on me!!!!
1. I take it out the box
2. I plug it into the firewire port
3. I update it
4. I unmount it via ITunes
For the third time in a row, the iPod stops showing on the desktop. It won't mount. I can't see it in diskutility, it doesn't show on the desktop or iTunes.
I'm at a loss as to what could be the problem. Last time it broke, I got the funny cursor thing where the cursor jumped around when the iPod was plugged into the FW port.
I'm running 10.3.2 and I think that this may be where the problem lies. The iPod is running OS 2.1.
Am I just really unlucky or is there something seriously wrong here? I haven't purchased the iPod direct from Apple, each time I've purchased it from a shop in the UK (John Lewis)
I really don't want to go back, spend an hour explaining to them that it's broken again if this problem is just going to go on and on. I also don't want to contact Apple directly for repair because I'll be without my iPod for 2-3 weeks.
What do I do?
I mean, I purchased this iPod less than two hours ago and I could just go back and replace it but there's only so many times I'm prepared to carry on doing so.
First, does anyone have Steve jobs email? Even if I don't get a reply I still want to vent some frustration
I'm just sooo pissed.
Any suggestions? Am I the only one with this problem?

What is your problem exactly, it's not clear? Unmounting it from iTunes, unmounts it from the system. So it won't show up on the desktop, after you unmount it from iTunes.
Is your problem it doesn't remount, when you unplug replug?
If you want to access the iPod on the desktop, leave it mounted in iTunes.

I've had this problem wit three iPods now. Apple said I was just unlucky
Yeah, ok.
I posted this before, here's a repost of the problem:
I had a new 40gig delievred last week. All was working fine until last night. I tried to do an update of some songs and the IPod didn't mount on the desktop.
I Tried resetting, I tried pressing the previous and next buttons together as per Apple Support but instead of coming up with the message "do not disconnect" it said "ok to disconnect" and then it frezzes until I do another reset.
I've checked disk utility and the IPod doesn't show up.
I've also tried it in a new account and also on a different computer but still, the IPod won't mount.

I had the same problem, which for me was solved by using a different firewire port - both of my ports are working (imac 800) but the ipod just did not like one of them and 50% of the time would not mount - switching ports solved the problem.
Apple hardware test showed no firewire problems and I've had no other firewire issues......

Had the same thought....tried two different Macs and said problem persisted.
Can't wait to see the tech guy at John Lewis..I think he might scream at me
I've had a look around and found plenty of people with the same problem. People on Windows are getting it too...

sorry if this is a totally stupid question. you get it updated, and the unmount it in itunes, and then you want to see it on the desktop? do you take the ipod out of the dock and then put it back in? this is what i have to do to get it back on the desktop... there is no way to mount it, mine just sits there and charges. sometimes if i restart itunes, itll remount, but more often than not, when its chilling in the in dock there chraging, i have to physically take the ipod out of the dock and then put it back in (i get the little beepy sound too).
holy run on. i still have NO (not one) idea if this is what youre talking about.
if it isnt, im really sorry to hear about your trubs.
Dan.

Solution:
Unplug all firewire devises from the computer except ipod cable.
Search your hard drive for the "com.apple.iPod.plist" file and trash it.
Plug ipod into computer without using the dock.
That seems to work for me after the computer can't see the ipod.

See that's what I thought the question was! He unmounts it through iTunes, so it unmounts from the desktop/finder and therefore the only way to remount the iPod is to reconnect the iPod, in which case it's supposed to be like that. Relaunching iTunes may also remount the iPod, but kinda rare, IIRC.

Now that's a bloody good idea!! I never thought of that. Incidentally, I got my new iPod today. another exchange. the guy in the shop said that there's possibly a problem with OS10.3.2 and the firewire bus. Trashing the plist seems like a good idea though. Then again, if the iPod doesn't mount on any other computer PC or Mac then surely that wouldn't make any difference?

All i know is that there seems to be some problems with macos x/itunes 4 that cause some weird problems. Everything from itunes freezing during transfers to the ipod not being recognized. That plist is in charge of keeping track of when the ipod is connected and not connected. Erasing seems it and doing the other things i mentioned seems to fix all my problems that i was having with my ipod. As far as i know, I have not heard of any of these problems with the windows versions.

Thanks for that. If it happens again I'll give it a shot. I'm a bit scared of plugging the iPod in at the moment. I need to pluck up some courage
