I know a few digital photographers who have considered buying one for the hard drive alone, which retails for $500.

yeah, and i wonder if that is why so many of the minis sold.

i really hope apple isnt taking a loss on the mini, in a effort to get more sales at the ITMS. that might just bite them in the ass.

I highly doubt that. Apple knows they aren't going to make any (real) money on the iTMS. It's merely a vehicle to push iPods. And it's working. Apple's biggest money maker is the iPod, and I doubt they are taking a loss on the mini. They probably got a killer deal on those Hard Drives by buying in bulk.

Personally I don't care why people are buying them. As long as they are buying them. What's good for Apple is good for Apple's customers. Seems to be the more successful Apple is, the more insanely cool products they come out with. I think the next couple years are going to be the best Apple has ever seen. I can't wait!

Yeah, it's $500, but I don't see the normal connectors on it -- I see the copper connector. Are the normal compact flash connectors present on the HD? I looked, but I couldn't see them in any of the pictures.

It's entirely likely it has a different connector designed SPECIFICALLY to disallow what you mention. Otherwise I know what they mean... thought about it myself

The drive is a regular Microdrive in a CF form factor, the connector you're seeing is just a CF-pin out to a smaller connector to save space. You can remove the connector and pop it in a CF reader. However, the folks over at dpreview are having trouble getting the drive to be recognized inside cameras, it seems like Apple did something to the format or firmware that is messing something up.

More likely than not, it was the camera manufacturers that made the mod. I'm sure Apple would be more than happy to sell more iPods regardless of whether someone took them apart or not. The same goes for the HD manufacturer. They've already got a deal with Apple. If they make it difficult for someone to take it out of a cheaper iPod and use it, then they still get the sale that would have benefitted Apple instead.

Yeah, I don't think that much thought was put into what to do about people buying the iPod mini for the drive alone. Apple had presales of 100,000 iPods, ya think maybe they got a batch discount.
