I just got my first Audible book onto my iPod. The book is over 10 hours long (longer than the iPod's battery life). Obviously, you'd want to be able to pick back up where you left off. My music doesn't do this - every time I plug it back into the computer, it forgets where I was in the song. Is there some way to bookmark position in an Audible book?

Audible has a FAQ entry for this, but their answer (use the eject button in iTunes to remove the iPod, and it will keep the position) leaves room for questions. If I remove the iPod one time without the eject button, I lose my position in the book? Can I maintain position in several books at one time? What if I listen to some music in between listening to parts of the book?

On my iPod, I just stop listening to the book whenever I want, listen to music, connect/disconnect from the Mac, and when I come back to the book it remembers where it was when I left off. There really isn't anything you should do. It's supposed to just work.

Then only gotcha is that if you plug it into the Mac, when you go back later to listen to the book, you have to select the book from the menus to play it again, but it will pick up where you left off.

It works automatically. I used to subscribe to the 1 hour car talk audible show. If I paused the audible file and switched over to a MP3 and then came back to the audible show it would pickup where I left off. Nothing special had to be done.

This doesn't work for MP3/AAC files, only audible.

No idea if it works if you drain the iPod battery completely and are forced to do a complete restart.

Cool. I was worried about it because it doesn't do that with music.

Yeah, I wish it would work with music too.

Audible books also have a really cool feature where each track is broken up into smaller sections. If you hit the center button on your iPod while the book is playing (just as if you were going to fast-forward through a song) you will see the progress bar is broken up into smaller chunks. You can then use the next and back buttons to jump between chunks. This seems to only work on the iPod, and comes in handy. I wish it also worked in iTunes.
