My epson no longer seems to want to print under panther. First noticed it in word (all latest updates applied to both word and system). The printer does not appear in the list of available printers in word, but does for the rest of the MS office suite. No matter which program i try to print from (safari, turbotax, excel, etc) the documents spool and tell me that it's printing in the epson print monitor, and then goes straight to no job printing. I've reinstalled all the epson print drivers from the panther cd. I've tried connecting via all the USB ports, and those are all good (i can print test patterns from the epson print center), and all the ports drive my other USB devices.

This is on a g5. Printer sharing is on.

Any thoughts?

I have that printer and since upgrading to OS X I have troubles about every 2 months.

Try this: Open print centre and delete any jobs waiting to print. Click the 'stop queue' button. Turn off the printer. Turn off the computer. Don' try to print for about a week.

After a week, turn on the printer. Once it has done its bizzo, open the print centre and start the print queue again. Print a document. Should work.

...I really am looking to get a new printer now, but that technique has never failed me!

running disk utilities and fixing permissions fixed *almost* everything. the very odd part is that ms word still doesn't recognize the epson as b eing present (every other office components does though - just not word...)...

the workaround is to export the word docs as .pdf and print them from preview, but that's obviously not a great fix, so if anyone has a better fix, i'm all ears 8-)

I've had no end of problems with a near identical printer (760).
It worked preferctly in OS 9. But in OS X (10.2 or 10.3) the quality is utter shite.. Lines all through picts as if it needed to be aligned, and often black doesnt get printed at all! Its done this on several different macs running X. But always works fine again in OS 9. Turns out a friend of mine with a 740 has exactly the same problem. Another friend with one of those Epson photo printers (dunno the model number, but it can take memory cards etc) also finds OS X printing performance to be particularly crap.
Whats going on??
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Epson SC760 here, G4 running 10.2.8 with no problems. Printer works fine in 9 and X.

Grrr, did you allow Epson to install a kernel extension? No extension is needed under X, my /System/Library/Extensions/ folder doesn't have anything for the printer.

Sebastian, this sounds like a Word preferences problem. Try trashing the preferences file, empty trash, and restarting Word.

I have installed only the standard OS X installation, including Epson driver sets. Nothing more.
I know there are built in 'Gimp'(?) drivers with the OS too that can apparently work for this printer. But I have no idea how to switch between the 2. Maybe this is the issue in my case? I got no clue.. Suggestions welcome
